Players: 2-5 Game time: 15 - 30 mins Ages: 8+

If you’re on the lookout for a quick, strategic card game with a fun seafood theme, then Sakana Stack might just be what you need. This climbing/shedding card game will have you competing against other players to see who can build the most valuable stack of seafood in a vibrant, fast-paced marketplace setting. With simple rules and a fun twist, it’s a perfect addition to any game night. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s dive in!

How to Play:

In Sakana Stack, you’ll be playing stacks of seafood cards from your hand. The aim is to build a stack that’s more valuable than your opponents' by matching suits or numbers with the last played card. Sounds easy, right? Well, here’s the catch: the bigger your stack, the higher the scoring potential, but only if the next player can’t match your play and passes.

Each round continues until one player sheds all of their cards or the draw pile runs out twice. The player with the highest score at the end of all rounds (equal to the number of players) is crowned the most successful market vendor!

Gameplay Breakdown:

  • Objective: Create the most valuable stack of seafood cards by matching suits or numbers, and score points if the next player passes.

  • Turn Sequence: On your turn, play a stack of matching numbers that must either match the suit or number of the last played card. If the next player can’t match your play, you score the value of the top card in your stack.

  • Game End: The round ends when a player sheds all their cards or when the draw pile runs out twice.

  • Victory: Play multiple rounds (equal to the number of players), and tally the points. The player with the highest score is the winner.

What We Liked:

  • Simple to learn, hard to master: The rules are straightforward, but timing and strategy add a lot of depth.

  • Thematic fun: The seafood market theme adds a lot of charm, with colourful seafood cards that are visually appealing.

  • Quick rounds: Games typically last around 20-30 minutes, making it great for a filler between bigger games or for casual play.

What Could Be Improved:

  • Luck of the draw: The draw pile introduces an element of randomness, which can limit your strategy if you’re unlucky with card draws.

  • Light on Strategy: More serious gamers looking for a deep challenge might find the game a bit light.

  • Rules Sheet: This could be a little clearer with regards to the 'must follow' rules, but we do have a prototype so this can easily be fixed.

Final Thoughts: Sakana Stack is a delightful card game that blends luck and strategy in a fast-paced and accessible format. Whether you’re aiming to create the biggest stack or just trying to shed your hand as quickly as possible, this game offers fun for players of all ages. Its quick rounds make it ideal for family gatherings, casual game nights, or as a warm-up before tackling something more complex. For sure an amuse bouche game. If you’re a fan of classic card games with a modern twist, or if the idea of out-stacking your opponents in a lively seafood market sounds like a good time, Sakana Stack is definitely worth adding to your collection!
