We've been publishing our game reviews for a while now, but unless you've been around from when the channel started on YouTube then you probably won't understand our rating systems at the moment.

So today we're going to break down what we look for when we review our games and explain what our ratings mean.

The first thing to mention was that we wanted our own geeky style, so we chose to use a D6 score rather than the traditional star system.

So overall we generally look at these main areas when we're reviewing a game:

  • Replayability: Does this game get old quickly, or would you find yourself wanting to play it over and over again? Generally, one-shot wonders won't score well with us.

  • Production Value: How does the game look and feel? What is the quality of the components like? How easy is it to use?

  • Theme: Most games have a strong theme, but how deep does it go? Is it just skin deep or is woven through the fabric of the game?

  • Complexity: How heavy is the game, is it something you need a degree in game theory for, or is it something light and easy to drop in as a palate cleanser in a gaming day or lunch-break?

  • Rules: How easy are the rules to understand? Will I be reading for hours to no avail or is it instinctive to learn as you play? Do they cover everything or are they too generic to be useful at all?

  • Uniqueness: Does this game have the new wow factor; something that it can call its own, that makes it truly unique in such a wide and diverse marketplace?

  • Value: Not explicitly cost, but value for money; just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's not worth it.

So what do our overall scores mean?

Terrible - No redeeming features, kill it with fire!

Bad - A pretty awful experience, or just not fun at all.

Meh - Had some potential, but is either flawed or is just boring.

Good - A decent and fun experience, especially if you are a fan of the genre.

Great - A well polished, thoroughly enjoyable game, albeit with just a few small flaws stopping it from becoming a masterpiece.

Excellent - A brilliant game and the highest honour we can bestow upon it. Buy now! Run! Buy now! Why are you still here? Buy now!

We hope that helps explain how we think with our reviews and helps you to understand our scores. Please comment below and let us know your thoughts - or if you like the way we think and want to write your own review, you're very welcome to submit a guest article!
